Thanks to the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board Capital Transport fund, we’ll be installing new crossing facilities outside 8 Auburn Street, in the Takapuna Town Centre. This will improve access to the shared path and prioritise people crossing, especially our tamariki and the local community.

The changes we’re making in October:

  • Install a new zebra crossing and median islands outside 8 Auburn Street. The zebra crossing prioritises people crossing and makes it safer to cross, as drivers must stop and wait for them. The median islands are a small section of pavement within the median strip, surrounded by concrete. It helps people crossing to safely wait for a gap in traffic (while giving way to motorists) to finish crossing the road.
  • Rebuild the footpath on both sides of the crossing to provide more room and a safe area to wait before crossing the road.
  • Install pram crossings, making it safer and more convenient for people pushing prams or strollers and ensuring those with mobility needs can navigate crossings more easily.
  • Install a new high-friction road surface to improve skid resistance near the crossing.
  • Install new tactile pavers, which are yellow guidance markers for those who are visually impaired, to safely find the crossing.

A larger drawing showing the changes can be found to the right of this page.

Benefits to your community:

  • Improves safety for everyone with different accessibility needs and reduces speed in the area.
  • Encourages drivers to slow down and take extra care when approaching the crossing, and improves visibility between motorists and people crossing the road.
  • Walking is good for the environment and good for your health. It helps reduce reliance on cars for local trips, decreasing traffic congestion and reducing our carbon emissions.

What happens next:

  • We will be in touch with residents and businesses before any construction takes place.
  • Any change to the plan will be updated on our website.
