About the project
Auckland Transport is proposing minor safety improvements at several high-risk locations across the Auckland network. These projects are part of the High-Risk Corridor programme, which aims to reduce run-off-road and head-on crashes through targeted safety interventions.
These five corridors, totalling 41.8 km in length, have a poor safety record with crashes caused by run-off-road and head-on crashes. Based on the crash history, there were 187 run-off-road and head-on type injury crashes reported from 2019 to 2023, of which eight resulted in fatalities, 22 in serious injuries, and 74 in minor injuries. An additional 17 crashes of the same trend occurred in 2024.
Proposed Changes
We are proposing to install Audio Tactile Profiled (ATP) road markings along edge lines and/or centre lines at identified locations. ATP markings provide drivers with audio and tactile feedback when their vehicle drifts from the travel lane, helping to keep drivers alert and within their lanes. This treatment has been proven to reduce crash risk, particularly on rural roads with curves where driver attention may be compromised.
The sites included in this work are as follows:
· Glenbrook-Waiuku Road
· Awhitu Road
· North Road
· Papakura-Clevedon Road
· Pukekohe East Road
This work is planned for construction this financial year, with the possibility of extending into the next financial year if unforeseen circumstances occur.
