Consultation Outcome

After reviewing the feedback we received, we are proceeding with no change on our proposal to paint additional 19 metres of broken yellow lines (no stopping at all times) outside the back entrance of Elim Christian College (opposite 60 Allendale Road), Mount Albert.

What happens next

We anticipate these changes will be installed between July and August 2025.

We'll be in touch with local residents before any changes take place.

Community Feedback

Thank you for helping us make better decisions for your neighbourhood, informed by your local knowledge.

We received 9 submissions on our online survey.  Most people lived in the area.

Summary of the feedback count:

  • 1 person expressed that the changes would benefit the community.
  • 6 people stated that the changes would benefit the community but also made a suggestion.
  • 2 people advised the proposal would not benefit the community.

Below is a summary of your feedback and our responses.

Feedback in support of the changes:

  • “Safety and visibility for traffic, the school and pedestrians.   it’s a great idea and let’s do it and see if it’s enough to make it safer.”
  • “It would be much safer in a narrow area.”
  • “Extremely dangerous coming over the rise in both directions as it is effectively a blind hill. With vehicles parked at the top of the hill, if two cars in opposing directions were to meet there would be no avoiding a head on collision.  Given the volume of traffic that rat run through Allendale and McLean Street, this is an important upgrade.”
  • “It would improve the safety of the road in that location, especially for traffic turning from McLean Street. onto Allendale Road. Also, as someone who lives at 58 Allendale Road, turning out of the driveway there onto Allendale Road towards Richardson Road is quite dangerous feeling when people are parked on both sides of that section of road.”

Suggestions to improve the project

Employ a parking warden and install a drop-off zone at the school campus.

The proposal is in response to local drivers' concerns that they cannot see approaching vehicles when travelling uphill because cars block their visibility when they are parked on the road near #60 Allendale.  A parking warden is not the appropriate control measure to stop cars parking here, 24/7.

We remind drivers not to park on broken yellow lines (no stopping at all times) as they may receive an infringement notice.

Also, we do not have the authority to make changes to private property such as the school campus to make a dedicated drop off zone.

Suggest for double yellow lines, road widening and no parking zone near the top of Allendale Road.

Allendale Road is about 8 meters wide. By removing parking on one side (2 meters), there will be a 6-meter-wide lane that allows two vehicles to pass safely at the same time.

We need to balance parking for residents and visitors with keeping our roads accessible.

Therefore, we are unable to justify installing additional yellow lines on the other side of the road.

Maintain a speed bump outside 56 Allendale Road, as it has become flat over time, allowing cars to speed over it.  This increases the hazard at the McLean Street and Allendale intersection.

The request to maintain the speed bump at 56 Allendale Rd will be forwarded to the maintenance team.

Parking Restrictions / Broken Yellow Lines

  • Request for parking restrictions further down on the other side of the road to prevent narrow and dangerous conditions when cars are parked on either side of the road, making it difficult for traffic to pass through safely.
  • Suggestion for the broken yellow lines all the way down that side of Allendale Road to Richardson Road. The road becomes one way in places when people are parked on both sides and can feel dangerous when impatient drivers are navigating it.

We believe that on street parking serves as an effective tool for maintaining acceptable speeds in the street.  Parked cars might reduce traffic to one lane, but they also make the road feel narrower, which encourages drivers to be more careful.

We will keep monitoring the area.

Install signage to slow down.

Speed bump signs, school signs, and pedestrian signs have been installed along Allendale Road.

Too many road signs can distract or overwhelm drivers, therefore, we have decided not to add any more signs on this road at this time.

Reduce the speed limit on Allendale and McLean Streets from 50 kph to 30 mph and install a school zone slowdown signage.

The Ministry of Transport and NZTA Waka Kotahi have recently confirmed the 2024 Setting of Speed Limits Rule, which introduces a new approach to speed management. According to this new rule, the speed limit for urban streets is set at 50km/h. There is an option to reduce the speed limit to 40km/h in areas with high pedestrian or cyclist activity, typically in town centres.  Therefore, we currently do not have plans to reduce the speed limit on your street.

Install a pedestrian crossing on Allendale Road and remove the traffic islands at the bottom of Allendale Road.

We will investigate the feasibility of a crossing facility on Allendale Road.

The traffic islands along Allendale Road are implemented as a speed calming measure.

The removal of the side islands may contribute to increased speeds. We are unable to justify removing the traffic island at this stage.

Miscellaneous

  • The proposal has been raised because people “feel” unsafe. Is it actually unsafe? Have there been any incidents or near misses?

Several site visits have confirmed that parked cars on both sides of the road limit visibility of oncoming vehicles. The proposed broken yellow lines will improve safety by reducing the chance of head-on collisions at the hill, where visibility is poor.

About the project

Locals have let us know that when vehicles park near the top of hill, driver visibility can be poor, making it feel unsafe to travel along Allendale Road.

To address this safety issue, we’re proposing more changes and would appreciate your feedback.

What we are proposing

  • Paint an additional 19 metres of broken yellow lines (no stopping at all times) outside the back entrance of Elim Christian College (opposite 60 Allendale Road).

Benefits and impacts

This proposal aims to improve safety and visibility.

  • Clearing this space of parked cars will make it easier for drivers and pedestrians to see oncoming traffic and make it safer to enter the road.
  • The proposed change results in a loss of 4 on-street parking spaces to provide better view of traffic on Allendale Road for drivers going uphill and downhill along this section of the road. This would make it easier for everyone to navigate the area and minimise potential blind spots.
