The summary below outlines key community suggestions along with our responses and actions.
Theme | Suggestion | Our response |
Improving driver visibility on Buckingham Crescent | Adding broken yellow lines between 32 Buckingham Crescent and Allenby Road to improve visibility around a sharp bend. Reports of a near miss due to parked vehicles blocking sightlines. | We have reviewed the location and understand how unsettling a near miss can be. The current road width supports safe traffic flow, even with parking on both sides, and nearby driveways help with passing when needed. While parked cars may slightly limit visibility around the bend, they can also encourage slower speeds and greater care when driving, which contributes to a safer street overall. At this stage, there are no plans to change the existing parking arrangement. We’re mindful that parking changes affect how people live and move around their neighbourhood, and we only consider removing parking when it’s essential for safety. Although there are no reported crashes or major safety issues at this location, we value lived experiences like yours. Please continue sharing feedback via our Contact Centre on 09 355 3553 or online at at.govt.nz/about-us/contact-us so we can keep track of emerging patterns and ensures we can respond appropriately if the situation changes. |
Pedestrian safety | Replace refuges with zebra crossings for improved safety | We have identified two key crossing points near the public restroom and the Buckingham Crescent intersection. We’ve investigated the option of raised crossings, but right now they’re not considered feasible due to flooding risks in the area. While pedestrian numbers aren’t quite high enough for zebra crossings, we expect the speed humps and refuges will help make crossing safer and easier for everyone. |
Cycling access and bike parking facilities | Add bike parking facilities in Allenby Park Add a cycle lane on Allenby Road to get to the park | Cycle facilities in parks, including Allenby Park, are managed by Auckland Council. We have passed your suggestion on to their team. While there aren’t any current plans to add bike racks as part of the playground and skate park upgrades, the team is aware of the request and will consider it for future improvements. There are no current plans for a cycle lane on Allenby Road. |
About the project
Allenby Park, Waenganui, is a popular destination for young people and families.
There are currently no pedestrian facilities on Allenby Road to help people access the park, and residents are concerned about drivers driving at high speeds.
To address community concerns, we propose to install pedestrian refuge islands, speed humps and other safety improvements. To accommodate these safety changes, six kerbside parking spaces on Allenby Road and two at the intersection of Allenby and Buckingham Crescent (north) will be reprioritised.
We expect these changes will improve overall road safety and benefit all road users.
We would appreciate your feedback on the proposed changes.
What we are proposing
- Install three speed humps on Allenby Road, between Great South Road and 55 Allenby Road.
- Install two pedestrian refuge island crossings on Allenby Road: one located outside the park’s public restroom, the second near the Buckingham Crescent (north) intersection, and the third one at the intersection of Buckingham Crescent (north) and Allenby Road.
- Install kerb ramps and yellow tactile pavers at the pedestrian refuge island crossings.
- Remove six parking spaces on Allenby Road and paint broken yellow lines (no stopping at all times), to prevent vehicles from blocking pedestrians’ visibility of oncoming traffic.
- On Buckingham Crescent (north), reprioritise the two kerbside parking spaces at the corner and paint broken yellow lines (no stopping at all times) to provide adequate visibility for pedestrians crossing.
- Extend the kerb on both sides at the Buckingham Crescent (north) and Allenby Road intersection to reduce the crossing distance.

Benefits:
- Safe crossing facilities: Making it easier and safer for you, our tamariki, and our community to access the park and be out and about with ease and confidence in your neighbourhood.
- Refuge islands: People can safely wait on the raised island if they are unable to cross the entire road in one go, improving overall pedestrian safety
- Speed humps: Help lower driver speeds and alerts drivers to slow down on approach, allowing better speed control.
- Improved visibility: Ensures people crossing can be seen by motorists.
