About the project

AT is providing public transport that goes to more places more often, including areas where there is population growth and new housing.

When Paerātā, Ngākōroa and Drury stations and City Rail Link open from 2026, we’ll deliver a new bus network for west Franklin. New and improved services will help you get to and from the new stations and AT trains, as well as local schools, jobs and town centres. There will be new bus stops.

We have some ideas about what the new bus network should look like, but would like to know what you think about the routes, the hours the buses will run and how frequent they will be, and the locations of the new bus stops.

Why we are proposing these changes

Aucklanders have told us they want transport that is convenient, well connected and accessible. One of the ways AT is delivering this is by providing public transport that goes to more places more often, including areas with growing populations and new housing.

An extra 130,000 people are expected to call south Auckland home over the next 30 years. Public transport will play a key role in helping them get around their local area and the wider Auckland region.

Construction of three new stations is underway in Franklin: Paerātā Station, Ngākōroa Station and Drury Station. These stations are planned to open from 2026 and will be served by AT’s Southern Line trains (South City Line trains once City Rail Link opens).

As the new stations and City Rail Link open, AT will deliver a new bus network for west Franklin. New and improved bus services will help people get to and from the new stations and trains, as well as local schools, jobs and town centres.

The proposed bus network for west Franklin is part of the 2023 – 2031 Regional Public Transport Plan, which outlines AT’s plans to grow Auckland’s public transport network over those eight years.

Benefits of the proposal

  • New and improved bus services will help people get to and from the new stations and trains, as well as local schools, jobs and town centres.
  • Some town centres, rural areas and rapidly growing housing areas will be served by AT public buses for the first time.
  • A well designed, integrated public transport network will give people choices about how they travel in west Franklin and will therefore help reduce traffic congestion and demand for parking.
  • People who can’t or don’t want to drive will have another viable transport option.

Impacts of the proposal

  • New bus stops will be built on kerb sides that are currently available for parking.
  • AT public buses will be run on rural roads with relatively high speed limits (60kph – 80kph). These buses will regularly stop at bus stops for passengers to board and alight.
  • There will be more pedestrians walking to and from the bus stops on these rural roads.

Your feedback will help finalise:

  • the bus routes;
  • the hours the buses will run and how often; and
  • the locations of the new bus stops.
