Will diesel or electric buses be used on this route?

The route is expected to be operated primarily by electric buses. On occasion, a diesel bus may be used if an electric bus is unavailable due to maintenance or operational requirements. Electric buses are being rolled out across Auckland as part of AT's Mission Electric programme and offer a range of benefits, including lower emissions, quieter operation, improved air quality and support for Auckland's climate goals.

How long will road works take if they are required?

We have provided 12 months as an indicative timeframe for completing the activities required to implement the route extension. This does not mean roadworks will occur for the entire 12-month period. The timeframe also includes other necessary stages, such as design, approvals, and consenting. Residents will be informed before any works begin, including when construction is expected to start and the estimated duration of the works.

How many bus stops are being proposed?

For Option A (Bonair Crescent), we are proposing four new pairs of bus stops. Each pair includes a stop on either side of the road, so while there are eight individual bus stops in total, there are only four bus stop locations along this part of the route, when travelling in one direction.

For Option B (Wainui Road), we are proposing three new pairs of bus stops.

Bus stops are proposed in pairs so passengers can access the service regardless of the direction they are travelling. The stops have been spaced to provide reasonable access to the service while maintaining efficient bus operations.

We will also be asking residents living near the bus stops for feedback on the stop locations once the route has been decided.

Will the new extended route be a loop?

No. The current route 989 operates as a loop service. The proposed extension would change the route to operate in two directions, with buses travelling back and forth between Silverdale and Hibiscus Coast Station via Milldale.
