Consultation has concluded
Improving road safety around St Mary’s College – 11 New Street, raised pedestrian crossing
We have received requests from the community to improve pedestrian safety around St Mary’s College, New Street.
We are proposing some changes to make crossing the road safer for students, teaching staff, and residents.
What we are proposing
We are proposing to:
Upgrade the existing crossing to a raised pedestrian crossing.
Remove the existing side islands
Install new pram crossings and concrete islands to shorten the crossing distance. This will provide extra space for a wider footpath so more people can wait to cross the road.
Install additional streetlights to enhance the safety and visibility of the crossing.
These proposals will not affect existing on-street parking.
Raising the crossing alerts drivers to slow down on approach.
Provides a safe crossing point, particularly for students attending St Mary’s College
Improves visibility and ensures people crossing can be seen by motorists.
Encourages motorists to travel at safer speed.
This initiative is supported by the Waitematā Local Board and funded through the Local Board Transport Capital Fund, a fund used to make improvements based on community priorities that other work programmes may not cover.
AT is delivering this initiative on behalf of the Local Board.
